The Indiana Army National Guard (INNG) has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Its origins can be traced to the Indiana Rangers militia, established in 1801 to protect settlers in the Indiana Territory. The INNG has participated in every major U.S. conflict since the Mexican-American War, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to national defense.
During the Civil War, Indiana contributed over 200,000 soldiers to the Union Army, with regiments participating in significant battles and campaigns. The state’s military units were reorganized in 1895 as the Indiana National Guard, solidifying their role in both state and national defense.
In World War II, the 38th Infantry Division, part of the INNG, earned the nickname “Avengers of Bataan” for their actions in the Pacific theater. Notably, Company D (Ranger) of the 151st Infantry Regiment was the only National Guard infantry unit to serve intact in the Vietnam War, earning more medals in 1969 than any other Army infantry company during a one-year period.
Today, the INNG comprises various units, including the 38th Infantry Division, 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 219th Engineer Brigade, and the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade, among others. These units offer a wide range of career opportunities, from infantry and engineering roles to positions in aviation and intelligence.
The Indiana Army National Guard continues to serve both state and nation, providing assistance during emergencies and contributing to global missions, reflecting a legacy of dedication and service.
